The Discipline of Spiritual Tenacity

Be still, and know that I am God. Psalm 46:10.

Tenacity is more than endurance, it is endurance combined with the absolute certainty that what we are looking for is going to transpire. Tenacity is more than hanging on, which may be but the weakness of being too afraid to fall off. Tenacity is the supreme effort of a man refusing to believe that his hero is going to be conquered. The greatest fear a disciple has is not that he will be damned, but that Jesus Christ will be worsted,that the things He stood for-love and justice and forgiveness and kindness among men-will not win out in the end; the things He stands for look like will-o--the-wisps. Then comes the call to spiritual tenacity, not to hang on and do nothing, but to work deliberately on the certainty that God is not going to be worsted.
If our hopes are being disappointed just now, it means that they are being purified. There is nothing noble the human mind has ever hoped for or dreamed of that will not be fulfilled. One of the greatest strains in life is the strain of waiting for God. "Because thou hast kept the word of My patience." Remain spiritually tenacious.

My Romance

My family went to World Mandate in Waco, Texas last weekend. The worship was indescribable, not to mention the conference. My Romance is one song that led us in worship. I've had it stuck in my head ever since I returned home. Click on the link. I hope it gets stuck in yours! Maybe even a little further South!

May your heart finds His Romance.

My Romance

Look at the way the flowers bloom for You
They want to show You their beauty Lord
Running waters dance, You and I romance

Chorus:

Unto You be all the glory.
Unto You be all the glory (repeat)

Bridge:

The angels dance around You
The earth it sings about You
Open up the heavens Lord
Let Your Kingdom come to earth

My praises all surround you
My soul can't dance without you
Open up the heavens Lord
Let Your kingdom come to earth

The Big Picture

I've started reading a new book. It's titled, What Really Counts for Men. I bought the book to use with youn men on the ranch. Turns out, I am the one who needs the life lessons of this book. Here's a peek:

"Teach us how short our lives really are so that we may be wise." ~Psalms 90:12 NCV

"We take excellent care of our bodies which we have for only a lifetime; yet we let our souls shrivel which we have for eternity." ~Billy Graham

WHAT MATTERS MOST...

*Seeking God first. This is the key to abundant life; that is how you have it all.
*Tending to your soul. That's the real you-your eternal self.
*Loving other people. Long after the things of earth are gone, they will live on.
*Building the Kingdom of God. No earthly Kingdom compares.
*Living eternal life. There's more to life than life on earth.

WHAT DOESN'T MATTER...

*Your pile of stuff. The person who dies with the most toys dies anyway.
*Your earthly status. Your real status is defined in heaven.
*Your long-term plans. Only God knows the number of your days.
*Being first. In the end, the first will be last.
*Anything whose significance dies when your body dies.

"The greatest use of life is to spend it for something that will outlast it." ~William James

Learn the Value of Sweat Equity

I can often recall a phrase my family often used on me as a kid: "Hard work never killed anyone." At that age, I thought that I might be the first.

I heard a story this past year about Craig Grochel as he talked to his staff at Life Church. One thing I know about Craig is that he strives to be the best in all that he does. It's not for his glory, but for God's. Craig made the comment that there was no one on his staff who was going to out-work him. That concept is contagious! That comment has motivated me in my mission at Willow Springs and Jacob's Ladder. We have an mantra at the ranch that is similar: "Be Proud of Your Work!"

I read this quote this morning from Stan Toler's book- Minute Motivators for Men:

"Contrary to popular belief, work is not a four-letter word. Working hard gives you a feeling of accomplishment, and it adds value to your life. Work is a way to add strength to the skill that God has given to you. So when you work, you worship.

Don't allow other people to outwork you on the job. Others may be stronger, younger, or smarter, but if you work as diligently as you can, your light will shine just as brightly.

Learn to enjoy the work you do at home. Don't allow your household chores to become drudgery. Take pride in the work you do in maintaining your automobile and other possessions. Everything you have is a scared trust from God. Be a good steward of what He has entrusted to you.

Teach your kids to work. Let them see that accomplishing something can be fun, and give them a reward for doing it. You can add value to anything you choose, if you work with a purpose in view.

Hard work may not keep you off the unemployment line, but it will keep you on the enjoyment line."

Colt's Locker Room after Super Bowl Victory

ColtsSuperbowlLockerRoom2007.jpg

I have a Colts helmet autographed by Tony Dungy. On it is his life verse:

"What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul?" ~Matthew 16:26

The boys from WSBR and I met Coach Dungy at an FCA Banquet in OKC before the season began. What a man of character and a tremendous leader. I was impressed with the comments that he made during the post game interviews. Jim Nance talked about the social significance of Dungy's win. Dungy agreed that being the first African-American Head Coach to win the Super was significant. However, being a Christian Coach and winning the right way was what was most important. This is a picture that is worth a thousand words. What a way to acknowledge the source of this team's success. Looks like the team has bought in and followed Dungy's lead. Good guys can finish first!

The Call of Wisdom

Lady Wisdom goes out in the street and shouts.
At the town center she makes her speech.
In the middle of the traffic she takes her stand.
At the busiest corner she calls out:
"Simpletons! How long will you wallow in ignorance?
Cynics! How long will you feed your cynicism?
Idiots! How long will you refuse to learn?
About face! I can revise your life.
Look, I'm ready to pour out my spirit on you;
I'm ready to tell you all I know.
As it is, I've called, but you've turned a deaf ear;
I've reached out to you,but you've ignored me.
"Since you laugh at my counsel
and make a joke of my advice,
How can I take you seriously?
I'll turn the tables and joke about your troubles!
What if the roof falls in,
and your whole life goes to pieces?
What if catastrophe strikes and there's nothing
to show for your life but rubble and ashes?
You'll need me then. You'll call for me, but don't expect an answer.
No matter how hard you look, you won't find me.
"Because you hated Knowledge
and had nothing to do with the Fear-of-God,
Because you wouldn't take my advice
and brushed aside all my offers to train you,
Well, you've made your bed-now lie in it;
you wanted your own way-now, how do you like it?
Don't you see what happens,you simpletons, you idiots?
Carelessness kills;complacency is murder.
First pay attention to me, and then relax.
Now you can take it easy-you're in good hands."
Make Insight Your Priority
Good friend,take to heart what I'm telling you;
collect my counsels and guard them with your life.
Tune your ears to the world of Wisdom;
set your heart on a life of Understanding.
That's right-if you make Insight your priority,
and won't take no for an answer,
Searching for it like a prospector panning for gold,
like an adventurer on a treasure hunt,
Believe me,before you know it Fear-of-God will be yours;
you'll have come upon the Knowledge of God.
And here's why: God gives out Wisdom free,
is plainspoken in Knowledge and Understanding.
He's a rich mine of Common Sense for those who live well,
a personal bodyguard to the candid and sincere.
He keeps his eye on all who live honestly,
and pays special attention to his loyally committed ones.
So now you can pick out what's true and fair,
find all the good trails!
Lady Wisdom will be your close friend,
and Brother Knowledge your pleasant companion.
Good Sense will scout ahead for danger,
Insight will keep an eye out for you.
They'll keep you from making wrong turns,
or following the bad directions
Of those who are lost themselves
and can't tell a trail from a tumbleweed,
These losers who make a game of evil
and throw parties to celebrate perversity,
Traveling paths that go nowhere,
wandering in a maze of detours and dead ends.
Wise friends will rescue you from the Temptress-
that smooth-talking Seductress
Who's faithless to the husband she married years ago,
never gave a second thought to her promises before God.
Her whole way of life is doomed;
every step she takes brings her closer to hell.
No one who joins her company ever comes back,
ever sets foot on the path to real living.
So-join the company of good men and women,
keep your feet on the tried and true paths.
It's the men who walk straight who will settle this land,
the women with integrity who will last here.
The corrupt will lose their lives;
the dishonest will be gone for good.
